Privacy of Online Data - The centerpiece of the IT integration in our Day to Day Lives

With the Sushant Singh Rajput case, among other issues including but not limited to mental health and drug abuse focus is now shifting to the importance of privacy of data. With the Narcotics Control Bureau accessing Whatsapp chats and reading deleted messages in the pursuit of justice, we realise how unsecure our data in today’s world is. End to End Encryption and other such features have given Whatsapp Messenger the title of one of the most ‘secure’ messaging services, yet it's times like these which make us realise the truth behind these services.

Is it right for law agencies to access such data? While it is important that those guilty are rightfully convicted, the lengths we must go for getting justice is something which needs extensive deliberation.

To truly resolve the issue at hand we must first truly be able to relate to the importance of data privacy. Data privacy is all about how a piece of information or data should be handled based on its relative importance. Data privacy is very important; it’s why people put locks on filing cabinets and rent safety deposit boxes at their banks. As more of our data becomes digitized, and we share more information online, data privacy is taking on greater importance.

Mishandling, leaking or corrupting data can cause unprecedented harm. A case in point is of the Cambridge Analytica Leak. The information leaked is said to have swayed the US 2016 Elections in the favour of the current President. The reins of the only superpower in today’s world could have been in different hands for 4 years had it not been for one breach of data confidentiality. The list of such examples is endless, and those are only the ones which have come to light...

I would like to conclude by emphasising that the successful implementation and strengthening of Data Privacy efforts will pave the path ahead for intrinsic integration of IT in our lives. The digital revolution is here, but are we prepared for it?
